What is the problem with asbestos roofs?

Along with the well documented health risks associated with asbestos fibres, asbestos roofs are now reaching the end of their product life. This means roof sheets may be in poor condition, leading to roof leaks and causing head aches over the best way to manage roof problems.

Stripping and re-sheeting makes your building look better from both the outside and inside. And you can let more natural daylight in by adding new translucent roof panels.

Before replacing your asbestos roof, you need to think about…

The condition of your existing support frames – these will need to be assessed to make sure they’re suitable for a new roofing system

The disruptions it could cause to processes being carried out below the working area.

Case study: Parcelforce Hereford

Leafield Projects were employed to strip and re-sheet an asbestos cement roof at a live Parcelforce delivery office.

This project has a number of tricky elements; the depot had to remain operational first thing in the morning and late afternoon. The surrounding buildings were to remain operational. On top of that the works saw some of the heaviest floods in recent history.

The works were co-ordinated to allow for an area of the roof to be stripped off at a time. Large scaffold access towers were built to help operatives safely remove the asbestos cement sheets.

Air monitoring was put in place to ensure methods of work were being carried out as stated in the project plan.

Despite losing two weeks to heavy rain and strong winds, Leafield still finished the work on time and on budget. Handing over a building with the following benefits:

  • Increased thermal performance
  • Increased aesthetics internally and externally
  • Increased lighting levels internally
  • Insurance backed 25 year guarantee

The project was subject to a number of Health and Safety audits, both by Royal Mail and the main contractor. Leafield Projects scored consistently high marks.

"Leafield Projects completed the project despite all of the obstacles thrown in their way. The works remained on time due to the reactions of the management team and the effort put in by their workforce." Bryn - Site Manager
